I love ML and Pytorch but I HATE web design. I did a CSS/HTML/Javascript course and I hated everything to do with web design.
Do you recommend leaning into my interests and only focusing on ML stuff, or do I need to bite the bullet and learn a bunch of web development related stuff?
I've been following your ML Engineer roadmap for a few weeks and I'm loving it. But I'm uncertain if I can get a job since so many employers are looking for web development knowledge.
If you are looking for your first job, you can definitely learn basic web dev but you won’t land a very lucrative role. Be prepared to be stuck there for a year before interviewing again with your new experience and transitioning to an ML role.
I would say keep diving into ML. Web dev knowledge is very limited in scope and be learned quickly, of course with the advances in code generation tools a lot of web dev will become obsolete.
That's great to hear. I've been grinding ML for the past few weeks and I've been loving it, while learning web development feels like pulling teeth.
The only reason I started learning web development in the first place was the notion that you need React, NextJS, etc knowledge to land that first job. But as silly as it sounds stumbling onto your substack has given me a lot more hope for the future.
Thanks for sharing! I appreciate that you tied together how your work lead you into AI adjacent skills. When you write about Microsoft AI, I'm especially curious to hear what onboarding is like and how you got up to speed :)
very helpful Arman!
